General Armor Information
Stormtrooper armor is one of the most recognizable movie props someone can own. There are numerous different variations of armor out there, all with different degrees of accuracy. Some of the most common types are Armor/FX, Movie/FX, Altmann's, and the GF/ANH suit, shown below. For more information on the different types of fan-made armor, visit the Star Wars Helmet Archive.
Most of the troopers in the 501st Legion, including myself, use Armor/FX for active duty purposes. This armor is very common, easy to modify, and has a strong, clean look. It comes in kit form (shown below), and each trooper is required to assemble and modify it themselves.
While Stormtrooper armor is fairly easy to obtain, most armor on the market is unlicensed. This means that it cannot be manufactured or sold for anything but personal use. There have been several entities in recent years that have come under scrutiny by Lucasfilm, because they were mass producing unlicensed armor. This has subsequently stopped, making some versions of armor much more difficult to find. Stormtrooper armor falls under the legal copyright of Lucasfilm, and therefore cannot be duplicated without a license. In general, Lucasfilm is VERY lenient with fans, as far as allowing them to create replica items and use copyrighted material in public. We all thank George for allowing us to play in his wonderful world!
