BICYCLING
2003
CYCLING LINKS
|
This
season Ken got a head start, riding with his son Bobby in California
while I recovered from surgery; but later in May when I was able to
ride, Ken was sidelined for shoulder surgery. My
23-year old son Joe was kind enough to ride with me until Ken was back
on the bike.
Our first major event was a metric century in June, a
62-mile benefit ride in honor of Bob Le Bow, a local physician who was
paralyzed in a cycling accident last year. (He died later in 2003
from complications of this accident.) Dr. Le Bow will be
remembered for his efforts on behalf of those who cannot afford health
care.

We're Off! |
Ken was
able to resume riding not long afterwards, and eventually the three of
us made the 17-mile climb up Bogus Basin Road (the local ski resort) -- one of
my major goals for this year. This year the Mormon Crickets have invaded our
area at that elevation, and their grease spots and body parts make for an interesting surface on the descent.
(A Mormon Cricket
looks like a cross between a cockroach and a grasshopper---ugh!)

Joe and Ken, halfway on
the first Bogus Basin Climb--a long, hot, dry summer here! On
Sept. 13 Joe and his dad did the official Bogus Basin Hill Climb.

At tracks in Greenleaf, on a
73-mile ride with Ken and Joseph to Parma in August. I
took a nasty spill when my front tire caught in the track after
slipping on the old wood in the crossing. There are no public
restrooms in Greenleaf, but the convenience store clerk kindly let
me wash & patch up in the butcher/produce sink. Ugh! |
| With
over 900 miles on the odometer before Labor Day, this year promises
to end with an improvement over last year's mileage, even if it's
looking like mostly local riding . But the year's long from over, and
there will most likely be another California ride in October when we
go for the birth of Bob and Arlene's son.

2002
We were able to
put over 1,000 on the bikes last year, taking them on vacation and
riding a 25-mile loop from Hailey to Sun Valley, Idaho; over the Bighorn Mountains in Wyoming;
a 48-mile ride through the Black Hills of South Dakota; a 22-mile ride
with Bill and Mary Pat in the beautiful Dunham Lake area in
Wisconsin; and a 40-mile ride from Lake Tahoe to Truckee, CA (and around
Truckee Lake).
We also
enjoyed many local rides, including our standard 32-mile "around Lake Lowell" ride.
Among the season's local highlight rides were a 61-mile ride to
Dedication Point overlooking the Snake River; a 42 mile ride from Marsing to Walter's Ferry,
looping around a different part of the Snake River on Highway 78 and Map
Rock Road; and a 52-mile ride to the World Center for Birds of Prey in
Boise.
